Lazuli Bunting in Tree Branches

Lazuli Bunting

Overview

The Lazuli Bunting is a delightfully colored little bird, related to cardinals and grosbeaks, that features a dazzling blue head and wings, contrasted with a bright rusty orange on its chest. The orange can also be seen splattered throughout the back. It prefers drier hillsides, consuming insects that breed in the arid landscapes.

Migration

Lazuli Buntings winter in western Mexico. In summer and breeding months, they’ll disperse to nearly every high-elevation area around the western United States, going as far north as southwestern Canada.

Where to Find Them in Jackson Hole

Look for Lazuli Buntings on drier hill and mountainsides. Trails like the Amphitheater Lake Trail in Grand Teton National Park and the Wildflower Trail at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort are good bets, though you can really listen for their call on any dry hillside.
