Overview
The Dusky Flycatcher is one of the flycatchers that are hard to distinguish from their counterparts. With subtle hints of green, they sport a distinct eyering as well as two bright wingbars. As with any flycatcher, the best way to tell them apart is by their calls. Dusky Flycatchers prefer bushes along streams, as do Hammond’s Flycatchers, however the Hammond’s tend to perch and nest higher in trees than duskys, typically evergreens.
Migration
Dusky Flycatchers winter throughout the interior of Mexico. Their summer breeding grounds include much of the western United States, avoiding the lower elevation areas. They’ll also stretch into western Canada, sticking to the mountains along the Pacific coast.
Where to Find Them in Jackson Hole
Dusky Flycatchers can be found throughout Jackson Hole, as can their hard-to-distinguish relatives. Look for the dusky along streams, typically perched low. Some of the most reliable spots to find them are the South Park Wildlife Habitat Management Area and the canyon of the Teton Mountains.
