Cinnamon Teal Preening in River

Cinnamon Teal

Overview

The Cinnamon Teal is a gorgeous duck that features a bright rusty plumage during the breeding season. They prefer wetlands and other slow-moving water areas, and interestingly, have a completely separate population in South America. Unfortunately, their population is currently declining.

Migration

Many Cinnamon Teals will winter in Mexico, some stretching north into southwest Texas, and the farthest southwest reaches of the American southwest. Year-round populations will also extend up the California coast. During the breeding season, they’ll migrate up all across the western United States, as far as southwest Canada.

Where to Find Them in Jackson Hole

Cinnamon Teals can be found anywhere there’s wetlands and slow-moving water. One of the best spots to find them is along the ponds between the Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center and the Flat Creek Overlook on the National Elk Refuge, easily accessed along North Cache Street in Jackson. Other possible areas include Schwabacher Landing, the Emily Stevens Pond Trail, and the South Park Wildlife Habitat Management Area.
